What Is Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty?

·3 min read·Medically reviewed by Op. Dr. Serkan Barışkan

Rhinoplasty (septorhinoplasty) is a surgical procedure that improves the shape and function of the nose. The recovery period after this operation, which changes the structure of the nose for aesthetic and functional reasons, is one of the topics patients are most curious about. Managing recovery correctly plays a major role in achieving a successful result. In this article we cover everything you need to know about recovery after rhinoplasty.

1. The First Day After Rhinoplasty: Rest and Recovery

Rest is important during the first 24 hours after rhinoplasty. Patients usually stay in hospital for one night of observation and are discharged the next day. On the first day:

  • Rest: plenty of rest supports the body’s healing process after surgery.
  • Apply cold compresses: cold compresses around the nose help reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Sleep with your head raised: keeping your head elevated helps reduce swelling.

2. The First Week: Swelling and Bruising Subside

The first week is when swelling is most noticeable. While healing continues inside the nose, the outside also begins to take shape. During this period:

  • Avoid very hot and very cold food and drinks: drink plenty of fluids and stay away from hard foods.
  • Check-ups: attend your doctor’s appointments to have the stitches removed and the inside of the nose checked.
  • Be careful with physical activity: avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting and demanding exercise.

3. The Second Week: Swelling Decreases and the Nose Takes Shape

From the second week, most of the swelling begins to go down and the nose starts to approach its intended shape, although the final result takes a little longer. During this period:

  • Clean your nose gently: clean your nose carefully without putting pressure on the inside.
  • Avoid sunlight: rhinoplasty can make the skin more sensitive, so avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreen.

4. Weeks Three and Four: Healing Progresses

In the third and fourth weeks after rhinoplasty, patients notice that most of the swelling has gone and the shape of the nose is becoming clearer. During this time:

  • Daily activities resume: light exercise and everyday routines can be resumed, but activities that risk a blow to the nose should be avoided.
  • Continued healing: even if the swelling has not completely gone, the nose starts to look more natural.

5. Completion of Recovery: 6 Months to 1 Year

Recovery after rhinoplasty usually takes between 6 months and 1 year. Although healing is visible within the first few weeks, the final result can take time to become apparent. During this period:

  • Patience is needed for full recovery: it may take several more months for the nose to reach its final shape.
  • Follow-up visits matter: check-ups are important for monitoring recovery and preventing possible complications.

6. What to Watch Out for After Rhinoplasty

To achieve a successful result, it is important to pay attention to the following during recovery:

  • Do not smoke: smoking can slow down healing and increase the risk of infection.
  • Limit alcohol: alcohol can increase swelling and prolong recovery.
  • Avoid hot environments: staying away from Turkish baths, saunas and similar places for a few weeks can speed up recovery.
  • Protect your nose from impact: the nose is sensitive after surgery, so be careful to avoid knocks.

Conclusion: Be Patient for a Successful Result!

Recovery after rhinoplasty varies from person to person. However, proper care, patience and following your doctor’s advice are the keys to a successful result. To achieve both an attractive appearance and a healthy recovery, it is important to follow the advice above.
