Fluid in the Middle Ear
Fluid in the middle ear is common in childhood and is often seen as a minor problem, yet if left untreated it can lead to permanent hearing loss, delayed speech and delayed mental development. If the fluid is caused by enlarged adenoids, the adenoids should be removed and the fluid drained at the same time. Fluid can also collect after a cold or flu; in that case medication is usually enough.
