Turbinate Surgery (Turbinate Reduction): Ways to Breathe More Easily

·3 min read·Medically reviewed by Op. Dr. Serkan Barışkan

What Are the Turbinates?

There are three pairs of turbinates in the nose: the inferior, middle and superior turbinates. Their main job is to humidify and warm the air we breathe and to filter out foreign particles. However, allergies, infections, chronic rhinitis, smoking and structural factors can cause the turbinates to enlarge (turbinate hypertrophy). This narrows the nasal airway and leads to breathing difficulties.

Symptoms of Enlarged Turbinates

People with turbinate hypertrophy frequently experience the following symptoms:

✅ Chronic nasal congestion – especially worse at night.

✅ Mouth breathing – can cause a dry mouth and bad breath.

✅ Snoring and signs of sleep apnoea – reduce sleep quality.

✅ A reduced sense of smell – affects daily life.

✅ Sinusitis attacks and headaches – a narrowed airway can disrupt sinus drainage.

What Is Turbinate Surgery?

Turbinate surgery is a procedure that reduces or reshapes turbinates that are blocking the airway. Its aim is to relieve congestion so that the patient can breathe freely. The methods used are:

🔹 Radiofrequency or laser turbinate reduction (cauterisation)

A minimally invasive method in which the turbinate tissue is shrunk using radiofrequency energy or a laser. It is usually performed under local anaesthesia and recovery is quick.

🔹 Submucosal resection

The inner tissue of the turbinate is removed while its outer mucosa is preserved. This improves airflow while protecting the functions of the nose.

🔹 Endoscopic turbinate surgery

Excess turbinate tissue is removed precisely using an endoscope inserted into the nose. This is often preferred in conditions such as chronic sinusitis.

Benefits of Turbinate Surgery

🔸 Makes breathing easier and improves quality of life.

🔸 Improves sleep and reduces the risk of snoring and sleep apnoea.

🔸 Reduces the frequency of chronic sinusitis and nasal infections.

🔸 Reduces the need to breathe through the mouth, preventing a dry throat and hoarseness.

🔸 Helps the sense of smell return to normal.

What to Watch Out for After Surgery

Recovery after turbinate surgery depends on the patient’s care. Pay attention to the following:

✔ Keep the nose clean: use the saline solution and sprays recommended by your doctor.

✔ Avoid strenuous exercise and hot showers, especially during the first week.

✔ Take your medication regularly: antibiotics and painkillers.

✔ Do not pick your nose or blow it hard – this reduces the risk of bleeding.

✔ Do not miss your check-ups – follow-up visits are important for monitoring recovery.

Non-Surgical Ways to Relieve Nasal Congestion

Not every case of nasal congestion requires surgery. In mild or temporary cases, the following can help:

🔸 Rinsing the nose with saline

🔸 Avoiding allergens and cigarette smoke

🔸 Humidifying the air at home

🔸 Using nasal sprays as recommended by your doctor

🔸 Keeping your head slightly raised while sleeping

Who Can Benefit from Turbinate Surgery?

✅ People with chronic nasal congestion

✅ People with sleep apnoea or snoring

✅ People with sinusitis attacks caused by enlarged turbinates

✅ Patients who do not improve despite medication

Conclusion

Enlarged turbinates (turbinate hypertrophy) can seriously reduce quality of life. Turbinate surgery relieves nasal congestion and allows the patient to breathe healthily and comfortably. If you experience breathing difficulties, snoring or sinusitis attacks, an ENT specialist can advise you on the right treatment.
